About Us

Vita Living's Mission is to provide lifelong services and supports for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to promote personal growth toward a safe, satisfying, and meaningful life in the community.

Our History

Our mission grew out of one family’s determination to ensure a high quality of life for their severely disabled son.

In 1982, Vita Living was founded by Renée and Stan Wallace to provide a “Vital Life” for their son and other adults with IDD. The original residence gave six behaviorally challenging adults a permanent home and 24-hour care. Vita Living maintained three group homes until the early 2000’s, when we expanded our services and began acquiring residences in the Sharpstown and Spring Branch neighborhoods. Most residents attended day center programs across the city and in 2016, Vita Living opened an on-site activity center program to improve their quality of life and offer tailored programming and medical attention. Vita Living also offers case management services for over 300 non-residential clients across seven counties.

In 2020, generous donors funded the construction of two new homes built to address all the needs of our residents and their caretakers with open floor plans, wide hallways, accessible bathrooms, a large patio and more. The construction marks a new chapter in the Vita Living story and how we center our clients’ quality of life. Each program is thoughtfully designed to give clients security and routine while also offering them opportunities for enrichment and community engagement.
